Spider Chain of Lakes is comprised of five interconnected lakes, which include Clear, Big Spider, Little Spider, Fawn, and North. The Chain hosts a fishery for walleye, musky, bass, and panfish. It is characterized by a rich underwater structure of reefs, points, and drop-offs, and large fish-holding cabbage beds abound. Spider Chain of Lakes Association (SCLA), founded in 1955, is a charitable organization dedicated to preserving the Spider Chain of Lakes for future generations. It works to protect the natural environment, and promote responsible use of this irreplaceable resource. Through education, water quality monitoring, and supporting shoreline and water regulations, SCLA fosters conservation efforts for the benefit of both the community and the ecosystem. The mission of SCLA is a shared responsibility to preserve and protect the Spider Chain of Lakes for future generations. The Purpose of SCLA is to preserve the area's natural environment and protect the healthy watershed by:

Threats and opportunitiesSpider Chain of Lakes faces significant threats. Invasive species like Eurasian Watermilfoil and Hybrid Eurasion Watermilfoil, although not present yet, pose a serious risk to water activities and wildlife habitat. Preventing their introduction is crucial, as removal efforts are costly and often ineffective. Although water quality remains very good, increasing nutrient runoff from fertilizers and development harms the ecosystem. Land-based invasive species, like the toxic Yellow Flag Iris (YFI), also pose a challenge. SCLA has been actively working to combat YFI spread since 2017. | Eagle Nest on Little Spider Lake |
